The fundamental unit of a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) that typically remains operational during maintenance is the specialized enclosure housing the batteries. This approach is influenced by electrical safety considerations, the training and experience of operational staff, and the design of control systems.
In March 2025 we announced five new battery storage projects with a total capacity of 221 MWh in the following cities: These projects, piloted by Kyon Energy – acquired by TotalEnergies in February 2024 – will benefit from Saft's latest-generation electricity storage technology (iShift LFP / lithium-iron-phosphate containers).
In May 2023, we launched our largest European battery-based energy storage project at the Antwerp platform in Belgium. With its 40 containers, the site will develop a capacity of 75 MWh, which is equivalent to the daily consumption of almost 10,000 homes.
In April 2024, we announced the launch of a new battery-based project in the country, at our depot in Feluy, with a start-up expected at the end of 2025. It will have a power rating of 25 MW and capacity of 75 MWh, thanks to the forty “Intensium Max High Energy” lithium-ion containers supplied by Saft.
Battery storage plays an essential role in balancing and managing the energy grid by storing surplus electricity when production exceeds demand and supplying it when demand exceeds production. This capability is vital for integrating fluctuating renewable energy sources into the grid.
Integration of energy storage products begins at the cell level and manufacturers have adopted different approaches toward modular design of internal systems, all with the goal of improving manufacturing efficiencies, reducing maintenance time and improving operational reliability.
