How to build your own outdoor base station

At about $500 this DIY base station is much more affordable than commercial versions. On its own basic GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System, the generic term for GPS and other similar satellite networks) is only accurate to within 20-30 feet.

These receivers could be in drones, agricultural machinery, autonomous vehicles, or survey equipment. The base station receives signals from GPS and other satellite systems such as GLONASS, Galileo, or BeiDou. It then calculates differential corrections based on its known location.

There's plenty of fun things you could achieve with such a base station: reverse-engineering of proprietary technology, security research, and probing for vulnerabilities through WWAN interfaces rarely considered as an attack surface. Maybe you could even set up your own cell network — if you ever go sailing in neutral waters, that is.

To reduce costs, DIY RTK base stations may use lower-end receivers and antennas, which significantly compromises performance, especially in critical conditions like urban canyons or areas with dense tree cover.

If you're interested in making your own portable power station, there are a few key components you'll need. First, you'll need a deep cycle battery or a set of batteries to store the electricity. Second, you'll need an inverter to convert the stored DC electricity from the battery into AC electricity.

A homemade RTK base station requires users to manage and maintain their equipment actively, detracting from the seamless experience of a system that 'just works.' Furthermore, conveying the health and status of a DIY station to the user is not straightforward, often leading to frustration and subpar experiences.
