One battery energy storage system (BESS) can provide multiple services to support electrical grid. However, the investment return, technical performance and lifetime degradation differ widely among different services.
Battery Energy Storage Systems are becoming an integral part of the electrical grid to provide ancillary services support as the integration of intermittent renewable energy systems increases into the grid. It is essential to estimate the life cycles and capacity degradation of such BESS which are used in critical grid applications.
With active thermal management, 10 years lifetime is possible provided the battery is cycled within a restricted 54% operating range. Together with battery capital cost and electricity cost, the life model can be used to optimize the overall life-cycle benefit of integrating battery energy storage on the grid.
