A battery energy storage system (BESS) is an electrochemical storage system that allows electricity to be stored as chemical energy and released when it is needed. Common types include lead-acid and lithium-ion batteries, while newer technologies include solid-state or flow batteries.
Energy storage systems allow energy consumption to be separated in time from the production of energy, whether it be electrical or thermal energy. The storing of electricity typically occurs in chemical (e.g., lead acid batteries or lithium-ion batteries, to name just two of the best known) or mechanical means (e.g., pumped hydro storage).
Battery storage can help with frequency stability and control for short-term needs, and they can help with energy management or reserves for long-term needs. Storage can be employed in addition to primary generation since it allows for the production of energy during off-peak hours, which can then be stored as reserve power.
IEC TC 120 has recently published a new standard which looks at how battery-based energy storage systems can use recycled batteries. IEC 62933‑4‑4, aims to “review the possible impacts to the environment resulting from reused batteries and to define the appropriate requirements”.
The time for rapid growth in industrial-scale energy storage is at hand, as countries around the world switch to renewable energies, which are gradually replacing fossil fuels. Batteries are one of the options.
