The battery energy storage park and its substation will be connected to the electricity transmission network using a 330kV AC underground cable, marking a first in Estonia. Baltic Storage Platform confirmed that the BESS will seek to ensure the stability and resilience of the Estonian electricity grid.
Estonia, June 2023: The price of electricity is 0.320 U.S. Dollar per kWh for households and 0.183 U.S. Dollar for businesses which includes all components of the electricity bill such as the cost of power, distribution and taxes.
Estonia's all-time peak consumption is 1591 MW (in 2021). In 2021 the electricity generated from renewable energy sources was 29.3 %, being 38% of the share of renewable energy in gross final energy consumption. Oil-based fuels, including oil shale and fuel oils, accounted for about 80% of domestic production in 2016.
According to Eesti Energia board member Kristjan Kuhi, the battery is able to respond very effectively to fluctuations in the power system. “This modern capacity significantly reduces the costs of balancing the Baltic electricity system and thus the end price for the consumer,” Kuhi said.
The 26.5 MW/53.1 MWh system was developed to boost the stability of the regional electricity grid and mitigate high peak electricity prices for consumers. The project, which came with a price tag of €19.6 million, was commissioned on February 1 only a few days before the desynchronization of the Baltic electricity system from the Russian grid.
