This chapter presents the important features of solar photovoltaic (PV) generation and an overview of electrical storage technologies. The basic unit of a solar PV generation system is a solar cell, which is a P‐N junction diode. The power electronic converters used in solar systems are usually DC‐DC converters and DC‐AC converters.
Energy storage provides active and reactive power compensation in case of overproduction of the PV generation. Results showed that curtailing PV generation is cheaper than installing batteries.
The increase of PV generation brings some challenges to the power system, for example, the fluctuation of voltage , the harmonic caused by power electronics equipment and the problem of renewable energy consumption, and so on.
Given the prominent role of photo-voltaic (PV) generation for meeting fossil-free energy-transition targets, it is to be expected that power distribution grids will host significant levels of PV generation in the future.
Large PV power plants (i.e., greater than 20 MW at the utility interconnection) that provide power into the bulk power system must comply with standards related to reliability and adequacy promulgated by authorities such as NERC and the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC).
With a typical DC/AC power ratio of 1.5, about 1.0 h of energy storage capacity is needed at the nominal power of the PV string to smooth all PV power ramps. The results illustrate that the set RR limit and the inverter sizing are important factors for sizing the ESS for PV RR control.
