Uninterruptible Power Supplies (UPS) have reached a mature level by providing clean and uninterruptible power to the sensitive loads in all grid conditions. Generally UPS system provides regulated sinusoidal output voltage, with low total harmonics distortion (THD), and high input power factor irrespective of the changes in the grid voltage.
• VI (Voltage Independent): this is the UPS in which the variations in the power supply voltage are stabilised by electronic/passive regulation devices within the limits of routine operation .
Input dependency characteristics -- Voltage and Frequency Dependent (VFD), Voltage Independent (VI), and Voltage and Frequency Independent (VFI). Rated Output Power - from less than 1500 kVA to greater than 10,000 kVA. The key criteria are shown below for AC-output UPSs that operate in a single input dependency (i.e., VFD, VI or VFI).
According to the IEEE standard ANSI/IEEE 446–1987, minimum power factor is 0.8 at the rated load and harmonics content less than 5% is preferred for the input rectifier of the UPS system. Table 8. Typical 3-Ø UPS System Specification by ANSI/IEEE 446–1987 . Fig. 27. Input Voltage and Current waveform.
Uninterruptible Power Supplies with hybrid storage system Uninterruptible power supplies with batteries as storage source provides good performance during grid interruption and blackout by suppling instant backup energy. However batteries cannot provide backup for a very long period of time and have limited charge/discharge cycles.
*See information below about input dependency characteristic In addition to these criteria, all AC-output VI and VFI UPSs at 100 % load must have a minimum power factor of 90%. Also known as "passive" or "offline" or "standby" UPSs, Voltage and Frequency Dependent (VFD) UPSs are capable of protecting the load from power outages.
